Bears Paw Japan Country Club is an 18-hole, par-72 hilly course in Koka, Shiga, opened in 2000. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus through his Golden Bear International design firm, and plays to 7,006 yards from the back tees, one of the longer courses in the area. The club operates on a self-play basis: caddies are optional rather than standard, and rounds are played with five-seat riding carts that stay on cart paths rather than driving onto the fairways. Green fees start from 6,500 yen on weekdays and 9,400 yen on weekends. The clubhouse has a bath for golfers after their round. By train, JR Mikumo Station on the JR Kusatsu Line is about a 15-minute taxi ride away; by car, the Meishin Expressway's Ryuo IC is roughly 10 kilometers from the course. As a Nicklaus design opened at the turn of the millennium, the layout reflects a more modern styling than many of Shiga's older clubs.
